The L2 Ultramaximizer in hardware form is the limiter that shaped the sound of countless records. It is not the transparent choice and it was never meant to be — it is fast, dense, and it makes things loud with a particular flavour that people still specifically request.
When we reach for it
Club-oriented dance masters, hip-hop, and anything where the brief is competitive loudness with attitude. Its IDR dither and word-length reduction remain excellent, and running the limiting in hardware keeps the final stage out of the DAW entirely.
Used with restraint
More often we let the Maselec MPL-2 take the peaks and use the L2 for the last half-decibel only. That combination gets the loudness target without the flattening that gave the L2 its reputation in the loudness-war years.
