Conversion with a point of view
The Burl B2 Bomber ADC exists because some records should not be captured neutrally. Its BX5 input transformer and Class A discrete front end add weight and a forward midrange as the signal crosses into digital.
When we choose it over the Prism
Rock, soul, hip-hop, anything drum-led. The Burl thickens the low mids and rounds the very top in a way that reads as tape rather than as distortion. On the same master, switching from the Prism to the Burl can be worth more than an hour of EQ decisions.
Sample rates and workflow
We capture at the project's native rate wherever possible and let the Burl's own clock run the conversion — its jitter performance is excellent and it consistently sounds better mastered than slaved.
How it sits in our chain
Prism Sound handles the main AD and DA on the Maselec MTC-2 and feeds the Trinnov for monitoring. The B2 Bomber is one of two alternative ADC options — the other being the Crane Song HEDD — patched in when a master benefits from transformer weight and forward mids at the point of capture instead of the Prism's neutral transfer.
