What Is Stem Mastering?

Stem mastering is a hybrid approach between mixing and stereo mastering. Instead of receiving one final stereo mix, the mastering engineer receives a small number of grouped stems — typically drums, bass, vocals, instruments, and effects — plus a stereo reference. The engineer then balances, processes, and assembles those groups into a cohesive, release-ready master.

When Should You Choose Stem Mastering?

Stem mastering is ideal when your mix is close but not quite perfect. If you feel the track needs a little more than a final polish, but you do not want to go back to a full remix, stems give the engineer the flexibility to make meaningful improvements without undoing your production decisions.

Common situations include: the vocals sit too loud or too quiet, the low end is inconsistent across playback systems, the drums need more punch, or the overall master needs to be competitive while retaining clarity.

Because we receive your mix in separate groups (drums, bass, vocals, instruments, etc.), we can balance, EQ, compress, and enhance each element individually while still keeping the overall mix intact.

If a vocal is too bright, a kick is too boomy, or the bass lacks weight, stem mastering lets us fix the issue directly without affecting the rest of the track.

Larger, More Polished Masters

By processing groups separately, we can push the final master louder and clearer while preserving dynamics and avoiding the artifacts that stereo-only limiting can introduce.

How to Prepare Your Stems

Good preparation is the difference between a good stem master and a great one. Follow these guidelines to give us the cleanest possible material to work with.

  • Export stems in the same sample rate and bit depth as your project session.
  • Make sure all stems line up at the same start point and are the exact same length.
  • Keep any mix bus processing light or bypassed, so we have clean headroom to work with.
  • Include a stereo mix reference as a guide, even if it is not the final master.
  • Leave headroom. Peaks around -6 dB to -3 dBFS are ideal for analogue mastering.
  • Label stems clearly: Drums, Bass, Vocals, Instruments, FX, etc.

Typical Stem Layout

There is no single correct way to split stems, but this layout is a strong starting point for most productions. We recommend keeping the number of stems between five and eight so the master retains the feel of a single mix.

Stem Mastering vs. Stereo Mastering

Stereo mastering is the standard choice for a finished, well-balanced mix. Stem mastering is the better choice when you need more flexibility to fix issues or enhance the final master beyond what a single stereo file allows.
