Preparing Stems for Mastering - A Client Guide
A practical, thorough guide from Dimension Mastering on how to prepare, group, export, name, and deliver stems for the best possible master.
Sending well prepared stems is the single biggest thing you can do to help your mastering engineer get the best result. This guide walks through everything worth knowing before you hit export.
What Is Stem Mastering?
Most tracks are mastered from a single stereo file - the finished mix, exactly as it sounds. Stem mastering is a different approach: instead of one file, you export several grouped submixes (drums, bass, vocals, etc.), each carrying its own EQ, compression, and effects from the mix. The mastering engineer then works with all of them at once, which gives far more control than a single stereo file allows - without turning the process into a full remix.
It is not needed for every song. If your mix is well balanced, standard stereo mastering from one file works great. Stem mastering earns its cost when there is a specific issue you want addressed - a vocal that sits a little too far forward or back, a bass that is fighting the kick - without asking the mix engineer to redo the whole thing. If you are not sure which you need, it is worth asking us directly; we would rather answer that question up front than receive the wrong thing.

How to Group Your Stems
There is no single universal standard, but two approaches come up again and again.
The full breakdown (up to ~8 stems). Most mastering engineers are happy to work with anywhere up to eight stereo stems. A typical breakdown looks like:
- Drums / Kit
- Bass
- Lead Vocal
- Backing / Harmony Vocals
- Guitars
- Keys / Synths
- FX (shared reverbs, delays, risers - anything feeding from multiple tracks)
- Everything Else (a catch-all for whatever does not fit elsewhere)
Not every song needs all eight - group by what is actually useful. A four piece rock song might only need Drums, Bass, Guitars, and Vocals.
The simplified four stem approach. For a lighter touch that still gives real flexibility, a well known alternative (associated with veteran mastering engineer Bob Katz) uses just four files:
- Lead vocal only
- Backing vocals only
- Instrumental (everything except vocals)
- Full mix (not a stem to be processed - just a reference of how it should all sound combined)
This gets you most of the benefit - especially the ability to rebalance the most important element, the lead vocal - without multiplying the number of files or adding much to the turnaround time or cost.

Processing: What to Keep, What to Remove
This is the part people get wrong most often.
Remove:
- Any limiter, maximizer, or clipper on your master bus - this exists purely to make things louder and takes away the mastering engineer's options.
- Any EQ, saturation, or "glue" compression that was only bolted on at the very end to make the mix sound bigger or brighter, rather than being part of the mix itself.
Keep:
- Any processing that is genuinely part of the sound - an EQ move, compressor, or saturation plugin that shapes the character of an instrument and was part of your creative decisions during mixing.
- All automation - volume rides, panning moves, effect sends. If it was a deliberate choice during your mix, it should carry through to the stems.
The test to apply: if you muted every plugin that is "just for level," would the song still sound like your mix, only without the final loudness push? If yes, you have drawn the line in the right place.
Syncing Your Stems
This is where small mistakes cause the most headaches on the mastering end.
- Every stem must start at the exact same point - bar 1, or 0:00:00 - even if a particular stem (say, a guitar that only comes in at the second verse) is silent for the first two minutes. Export the full silence rather than trimming it.
- Every stem must be the same total length, including any tails - reverb decay, delay repeats, a cymbal ringing out after the last hit. Cutting a file short the moment the notes stop can chop off audio that is still audible.
- Once stems are combined at unity gain, they should reconstruct your original mix exactly. If they do not, something in the export was inconsistent.

File Naming & Folder Organization
Clear naming saves real back-and-forth. A simple, readable convention works best:

A few rules of thumb:
- Avoid generic names like "Audio 1" or "Track 5" - you would be surprised how often these show up.
- Stick to letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens. Skip special characters that can behave unpredictably across operating systems.
- Keep everything for one song in a single folder, and zip the whole folder before uploading - it keeps files together and avoids anything going missing in transfer.
What Else to Send Alongside Your Stems
- A full mix reference bounce. Not a stem to be processed, but a rendered copy of your finished mix so the engineer can hear exactly how everything is meant to sit together.
- A reference track or two. A commercial release that captures the tone, energy, or loudness you are aiming for helps enormously - genre and era matter, so pick something that is actually close to your intended sound.
- Written notes. Song title, artist name, tempo and key if known, and anything specific you want flagged - for example a note that the vocal always feels a touch buried, or that you want the master louder than your last release but not squashed.
- Alternate vocal levels, if you are unsure. It is genuinely hard to judge your own vocal balance objectively. If you are torn, export two or three versions with the lead vocal at slightly different levels and let your notes explain the uncertainty.

Quality Control Before You Hit Send
- Import all your exported stems into a fresh, empty session and play them back together at unity gain. They should sound identical to your original mix. If they do not, revisit your export.
- Solo each stem individually and check for clipping - no single file should peak above 0 dBFS.
- Quickly check your mix in mono. Phase issues between stereo elements (a common culprit: stereo-mic'd acoustic instruments) can cause parts to thin out or disappear entirely when summed, and it is much easier to catch this before sending than after.
Delivery
- Compress your song folder into a single .zip file before uploading.
- Use whatever cloud transfer method your mastering engineer prefers (WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive are all common) - if you have not asked, it is worth confirming before you upload several gigabytes to the wrong place.
- Double-check the file names and folder structure one last time before sending. It is the last chance to catch a mislabeled file.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving a limiter or maximizer on the master bus "just to hear it louder" while exporting stems.
- Stems that do not all start from the same point in the timeline.
- Trimming off reverb or delay tails at the end of a stem.
- Vague or generic file names that force the engineer to guess what is in each file.
- Sending only the stems with no reference mix, no reference track, and no notes - context saves time and gets better results.
- Being indecisive about vocal level and not communicating it - send alternates rather than leaving the engineer to guess.
Quick Reference Checklist
