Mastering for Vinyl — A Practical Guide
Everything you need to know to prepare a mix for a vinyl cut — headroom, low-end, sibilance, side length and file delivery — from Dimension Mastering.
Vinyl is a physical medium. A needle traces a groove, and physics decides what it can and can't reproduce. A great vinyl master isn't just a loud digital master exported at a different sample rate — it's a version of your record that respects the format. Done well, it sounds warmer, wider, and more three-dimensional than the stream. Done badly, it distorts, skips, or sounds thin.
This guide covers what actually matters when preparing a mix or master for a vinyl cut.
Why vinyl needs its own master
Digital has effectively unlimited dynamic range, perfect stereo separation at every frequency, and no physical constraints. Vinyl has none of that. The cutter head has to physically carve your waveform into lacquer, and the playback needle has to track it back out. That imposes real limits:
- Low frequencies must be mostly mono, or the needle jumps out of the groove.
- Sibilance and harsh highs cause the cutter head to overheat and distort.
- Loudness trades directly against playing time and groove stability.
- Stereo width narrows naturally at the inner grooves.
A master built for streaming ignores all of this. A vinyl master accounts for it in advance, so nothing has to be fixed at the lathe.

Headroom and loudness
Forget streaming loudness targets. For vinyl, we want a dynamic master with real transients intact.
- Aim for around -14 to -10 LUFS integrated, with true peaks under -1 dBTP.
- Leave 3–6 dB of headroom on the master bus — no brickwall limiting.
- If you already have a loud digital master, send us the pre-limiter version. Squashed audio never cuts well.
The louder you push, the shorter the side has to be and the more mid/side distortion creeps in on inner grooves. Restraint pays back in fidelity.
Low end — mono below 120 Hz
This is the single biggest issue with vinyl cuts. Stereo bass causes vertical needle movement, which the cartridge can't track cleanly.
- Sum everything below roughly 120 Hz to mono.
- Kicks, sub-bass, and 808s should be centered from the mix stage.
- Wide stereo bass synths are the classic offender — narrow them, or high-pass the stereo sides.
- Check with a correlation meter: below 120 Hz, correlation should sit close to +1.
Sibilance and high-end control
Consonants like "s" and "t," bright cymbals, and aggressive hi-hats become groove-burning problems on a lathe.
- De-ess vocals more aggressively than you would for digital — around 6 kHz upwards.
- Watch cymbals and shakers panned hard; they'll be tamed at the lathe anyway, so tame them yourself with intent.
- Avoid boosting broadband high shelves above 10 kHz on the master bus.
Side length and playing time
Groove spacing determines both loudness and length. You cannot have both.

Longer sides mean tighter grooves, quieter cuts, and more inner-groove distortion. If your record is over the comfortable limit, consider a double LP or 45 RPM cut.
Track order matters
Inner grooves sound worse than outer grooves — narrower, duller, more distortion. Sequence with that in mind:
- Put your quietest, sparsest, most delicate tracks at the end of each side.
- Put the loud, dense, wide tracks at the start.
- Long fade-outs on the last track hide inner-groove artifacts beautifully.
Delivery format
Send us your best digital master, prepared for vinyl. What we want:
- One stereo WAV per side, with track markers or a separate cue sheet.
- 24-bit or 32-bit float, native session sample rate — no dither, no SRC.
- -1 dBTP true-peak ceiling, no brickwall limiter.
- Gaps between tracks baked in (typically 2–4 seconds).
- Filename:
ARTIST_TITLE_SIDE-A_VINYL_MASTER.wav.
